'Trading Spaces' family relives decorating disaster
KATU TV (Apr. 26, 2002)
PORTLAND - Thousands of people tune in every week to watch two couples take over one another's home and revamp a room.
As KATU's Helen Raptis reports, "Trading Spaces" came to Oregon recently, and when one family hated the way their room turned out, they found themselves trading their own space...again.
"You didn't see me crying, you didn't see me walking out for 15 minutes...running out," says Shannon about the edited version of the show that aired.
Shannon and Scott Pitts are reliving their time in the national spotlight when a room makeover on The Learning Channel's "Trading Spaces" turned into a disaster.
Their comfy, but cramped family room complete with trophy heads was transformed into a cold dark metallic movie theatre.
"It really was a non-functional room," says Scott. "We couldn't do anything with something dark and gloomy, all you could do was watch TV.
Their neighbors Kara and Sean Castro had worked for 48 hours with designer Doug Wilson on his space age creation.
Doug's attitude makes him the designer viewers love to hate on this popular show.
"It's nothing that they wanted or need. The only thing they can do here is watch TV," insisted Kara during taping.
"That's not true. That's not true," argues Doug.
"You have no idea how much they cut out on that. They fought constantly butting heads," remembers Sean.
Even when Kara worries about the stability of a hanging television she is dismissed by Doug.
"Don't get so nervous don't get so nervous, it's perfect! You want it at a slight angle," says Doug on the program.
But that same television came crashing down a few weeks later. A new one now sits in the remodeled, remodel.
Even though Shannon and Scott didn't like the way their home turned out, they say they'd still do it again.
They say they loved redecorating their neighbor's place.
