From an article Doug wrote for Paint Ideas:
Changing your hardware is a great and inexpensive way to give new life to an old piece.
- Metal handles from an old dresser or desk
- Denatured alcohol
- Old rags or cloths (to use with the alcohol)
- Drop cloth or old sheets
- 1 can Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Clean Metal Primer (optional)
- 1 can Rust-Oleum Dark Gray Hammered Metal spray paint
- Move to a spot outdoors and cover nearby items with drop cloths or old sheets to protec them from spray mist.
- Remove handles from the furniture or door you're interested in changing.
- Clean handles to remove all oils and dirt. Denatured alcohol is a great tool for this.
- If you want to ensure a longer lasting finish, prime the handles or pulls with Rust-Oleum Clean Metal Primer.
- Spray handles or pulls with the Hammered Metallic spray paint following directions on the can.
- After they dry, install your rejuvenated handles for a great new look.
